Default my XJ tranny Odesy

well the xj has not sell, so im probably keeping it, but I need to fix the tranny and 4x4, for those guys that dont remember me, my jeep has an auto tranny and it slow from a dead stop, ist like starting in second gear, and well the 4x4 does not engage from the cabin,

what can I do,, should I look for a new used tranny and transfer?

Check that everything is plugged in and you need to check to see what has been unhooked from the controls inside to the transfer case. Take pictures and post them up and describe what you find. We will try to help you get it fixed. Tranny is an AW4 and is pretty much bulletproof, so the tranny is probably not the problem.

ok I checked all plugs, and everyone is pluged.. today the reverse started giving me problems,, it kick back when put into gear, and it kinda vibrates..

HI Belto, were ya been? Tranny sounds bad, what's the tranny fluid smell adn look like?

the fluid is practically new,, its all nice and red..

I have been studying alot, and busy with 3 jobs..

Jon what makes you think the AW4 is bad? Have you ever seen a bad one? I have seen just one and it just needed a new solinoid. $30 fix.

On the 4wd the T-case shift linkage adjustment might do the trick. Wifes old ZJ liked to jump out of low-range until I adjusted it properly and a buddy had an XJ that wouldn't go into 4wheel until it was adjusted. Not that hard to do but it's nice to have someone inside(wheels must be chocked to prevent rolling) working the lever while you are underneath watching the lever function.
X2 on Blue's AW4 comment suspect the soleniod not the tranny, they normally don't go bad. I've always wondered if the wrong fluid(ATF3) could hurt the AW4?

For the transfer case have you checked the linkage to see if that is ill adjusted?

Not thinking it's bad, I just start with the fluid. I guess I did say bad. I have no experience with the aw4 but I do have alot of experience with chevy trans. The fluid usually tells the tale.

Yeah I have had plenty of GM trannies bite the dust TH350 and TH400 and even a couple of powerglides too. Never seen an AW4 that needed to be replaced though.

I found out of a jeep only mechanic in the area, so probably tomorrow im going to bring it in, and see how much it costs me to fix it, bc I dont have the mechanic ability to fix it myself, I can do up to level 6 stuff,, in a 1 to 10 rate...

well maybe I aint that good, but with a good set of guide rules I can do pretty good, but Im really afraid of tackling the transfer, and an auto tranny, the only tranny I have worked on was on an honda, and it was a clutch change.

I would not tear into an auto tranny either but the transfer case is pretty easy but you need real good snap ring pliers to do that job and maybe a couple of pair. I will tear into a standard and have rebuilt a couple which needed new syncro rings and have changed a gear cluster or two. Most challenging part is that sometimes you wish you had an extra hand or two. Motorcycle transmission is a lot harder and I have done three of those.
Still think I'm only a 4 on the scale though. I would never think of setting up Ring & Pinion gears and I have not tackled a steering box rebuild yet either.

I rebuilt a turbo 350 trany once but errm would not even consider tackling the AW4..I'd just hit a bone yard and find a replacement...
