Default Just got a CEL

Hi All,

This is somewhat of a preliminary post as I need to have the codes ran, but...

I just left work for lunch, and with in the first 100 yards of my drive I got a CEL. Really didn't affect anything except that when I got going it shifted through all the gears alright, but a little different than usual, but it didn't want to shift into OD. Didn't have to go far, so I stopped got my food and headed back to work, and this time it would shift into OD. It seemed like after I received the CEL, it was almost shifting tighter (which is nice), but it also seemed like it was taking a little bit longer to shift. Didn't seem like I was revving real high, just was at a higher speed before it shifted (2 or 3 mph higher than usual). I plan on stopping to have the codes ran on the way home but wanted to see if you guys might have any ideas based off of my small explanation.

Also, I did notice my reverse lights didn't go on right away when I put my jeep in reverse this morning.

Edit: see my update below with the code.

Edit: It does happen to be cold as $hit here in Michigan, if that means anything.
When's the last time you drained and refilled your trans fluid?

Do you use Dexron III/Mercon fluid (DEX/MERC)?

Is your trans fluid level full when hot?

Does the trans fluid look black, and/or smell burnt?

I drain/refilled about 5 times before the winter hit because I found out the PO was using AT+4, and I wanted to get some Dexron III/Mercon in there.

Fluid level is good, well should be, I checked it last week and it was good.

Isn't black, and it doesn't smell burnt as far as I can tell.

Edit: Also, I never had any issue with it not shifting into OD until the second I got the CEL.

Default Update - code

Hi Guys,

The code I received is P0705. See the picture for the whole thing. Not sure why the picture is sideways.

Just got a CEL-p0705.jpg

I'm gonna start my google search, but anyone know off hand what the fix is?

PRNDL ("Prindle") Switch, AKA neutral safety
Check wiring, replace switch

I agree with 89Laredo. Most likely related to your NSS (neutral safety switch).

Refurbishing it oftentimes (not always) restores full function.

A new OEM switch is pretty spendy; I'd stay away from the cheap NSS units that you may see on ebay. You get what you pay for.

Here is a link on refurbishing this switch. Spray some penetrating oil on the fasteners for this switch a day or two before you try to remove them; they can be a bear.

Thanks guys, that's what I was finding in my search. I've just always gotten good help here, so my first thought was to post about it and get the ball rolling.

My XJ actually shifted through all the gears on the way home from work (half hour drive on the highway, with a tad bit of stop and go traffic). Still had the CEL though. The weird thing is... it almost seemed like it shifted nicer when the CEL came on, but it just wouldn't go into OD.

I'll try and get the NSS cleaned up. Only problem is... it's cold in the D! I have a garage, but it's not heated.

Default update....

Well, this morning, even with temps being in the negatives, I didn't have a CEL on the dash. Weird how that is! I think some of it may have to do with this bitter cold, and some is that the NSS is a little dirty. It shifted through all the gears fine, but I still didn't have any reverse lights for the first 5+ seconds when I was pulling out of my driveway, then they kicked on. This has been the consensus all week with the reverse lights. I noticed this late last week too.

Seems to continue to be the case that I need to pull the NSS and get it cleaned up.
