The "ballast resistor", the cream colored resistor located on the fenderwell I believe.

If it is bad, it will shut off fuel. You can bypass it temporarily (jumper wire) to see if that resolves the issues; bypassing is safe, the resistor was eliminated in later models. It is there only to reduce noise on the fuel pump circuit.

Go to any auto store around you and get them to run a code.. If it's a 'lean' code it's probably 02

This is what it was on my '89, but the ballast was fine, just the connections to it..

If it was mine, I'd start it,let it die, not turn the key off or try to start again, go around front and check for fuel presure before I did anything else.

Not the O2 sensors. They're not even in play upon start-up. Ballast resistor and fuel pressure is where you start.

Renix does not store codes, and it absolutely is NOT the O2 sensor that's the problem. You're talking 2 very different fuel injection systems here..

I would check the resistor connector... and I would also change your fuel filter... When was the last time you did a tune up? Does your xj have good spark?
