I'm sure your intentions were good.

BUT, most symptoms that can have multiple causes. What worked for one person isn't necessarily gonna work for someone else.

I just hate for some poster to get answers which may cause them to spend money and time unnnecessarily so I have to speak up.

Understood. But the code check is free, and if the 02's werent bad then a code wouldn't show up... So what I suggested couldn't have hurt in any way. Just saying. I told him to "check" them not "change" them...

I understand. Unfortunately the Renix system on the 87 to 90s doesn't store codes and can only be read live stream with testers I don't believe the parts stores have. I happen to own the factory tester fortunately and grew up at the dealership service department when these things were new.

Sorry for my overreaction. It just seems that people throw things out in these threads and get the OP off on a tangent. Not the case here.

you can only pull codes if you have a check engine light on.

you can only have the codes checked by an auto parts store IF the vehicle is obd2 (96 or newer) otherwise they wont / cant check it.

Even if the check engline light in a 96 or newer vehicle has been on, if it is not on when you go to the store, they cannot check it.

the 02 sensor isnt going to cause a vehicle to stall, at worse its gonna cause an engine to run rich or lean, which will hurt performence a little and fuel economy.

I dont deal with all that jazz, I'm a man I don't want my exhaust releasing unicorn farts, I want it releasing good ole fashion smog.

95 or older for the win.

Now that we've been off on a tangent for a while, let's address the OP's issues.

For sure check the ballast resistor as tjwalker suggested.

Check the integrity of all vacuum hoses/piping. Pay particular attention to the one from the throttle body to the MAP sensor mounted directly behind the engine up on the firewall.

Always keep in mind that you may have more than one problem at the same time and you're not gonna find a "silver bullet" cure.
For instance, you could have bad vacuum lines and a bad ballast resistor at the same time. Check them both. It's easy.

Finally pulled the fuel pump, turns out the fuel hose on the pump was disconnected, so replaced the hose put new hose clamps and a new filter and all is well now!!
