Default intermittent sputter & low idle

Hey all,

Just recently my '89 XJ started to have this weird issue. With no obvious rhyme or reason she'll sometimes have a really low idle and hardly any pedal response, then it will go away & come back intermittently. FYI
She's got a new fuel filter, good fuel injectors, a new TPS, just did an oil change

Adjust? It ran fine for a while with new TPS, but how do you know the right spot to adjust it to?

Anyone know how to go about adjusting the TPS?

Thanks man, I will give that a try, although he doesn't specify where to place the black lead, I'm guessing grounging it anywhere will work fine.

The black lead stays in back side of terminal (D) for both readings.

Always had the same problem. I have adjusted and replaced the tps multiple times. Cleaned/replaced IAC, new plugs, wires all that stuff. o2 sensor, egr. The only sensors I haven't tried are, map, ects, cps.

Any other ideas for Myself and the OP?

Mine is also a renix.

Yea, a fellow XJ buddy mentioned CPS to me, I don't know, I'm probably going to just start throwing parts at this problem :/

Here is this link again, I have an intermitten stumbling issue with my '90 and I really need to check all these sensors and get it resolved. Also the ECU and ICM are suspect. Someone mentioned the coolant temp sensor can cause crappy running. Good luck!

Hey Thanks man!

**UPDATE**

I drove her around a little bit today, about 15 min, didn't act up at all! Very strange, I hate when issues go away/come back randomly, always the hardest to fix!!!

Always review tuneup hardware when experiencing driveability problems.

For your 89, that means fresh Champion copper plugs gapped to .035, new plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, and be sure air filter is clean. You already changed the fuel filter so you're good there.

Simple stuff first. Always.

Hey, thanks man, I've been drivin' her around for a while now and that problem still hasn't come back.... very strange. I'm going to do a tune-up once I get paid though,
Now that I think about it, it HAS been a while since I threw some new spark plugs in there.
Thanks for the advice!

Have that happening with my 98.
Runs good and strong and then the trouble seems to arise after shutting down for a short time or sometimes after idling at a stop light.
I describe it as a flutter, low idle speed, very rich exhaust, possible popping in exhaust at half throttle.
Let rest or play with throttle , it seems to clear when it wants. Then full power and RPM for maybe the rest of the day. or not
No fault codes, fuel supply OK,
?????????

Bill, try starting a new thread.

You will get better response as people won't have to read all about the original poster's issues.
