Does your diff have a rubber plug for the fill hole or a thread in plug?

If no one has messed with it you can call your local Jeep dealer with your VIN # and they can tell you what’s in it. But if you have a 8.25 in a 98 then that one would be a 29 spline So…I would do some more checking before changing because I have read that the newer 8.25’s are actually stronger than the D44. I have a 95 with the older 8.25 that’s a 27 spline and put a lock-right in it a year ago and have ran it pretty hard and its been great to me. But it depends on what type of wheeling you do. Mudding, crawling, snow and rut runs, how hard you are on it, what I would consider running it hard may not be hard at all for what you do. I do a mix, but mostly mudding, red clay hill climbs and snow. You know PNW stuff. Just some food for thought.

Sounds like you have the 8.25. I wouldn't say that it is stronger than the D44, but it is very close in strength. It is a good axle that will handle a lot of abuse. The only down side is the c-clip axle shafts.
