Default i dont know what transfer case i have

i looked under my jeep today and saw the first numbers on my transfer case were 242. but my shifter has only 2hi n 4hi 4lo. i just bought the jeep a month ago and was wondering if i had a transfer case that didnt come on the jeep originally. the 4wd works kinda crazy, it grinds on either 4hi or 4lo depending on how it feels. just wondering if i need a new shifter guide is all or if i need to swap out the whole case.
thanks guys

ok, well the 242 is a little bigger then the 231, also it has 5 shifter positions instead of 4. so just shift your lever and see how many spots it has that go forward (should be 4 forward spots if it is a 242)

What does your dash say when you shift to all the different options.

it's an older cherokee, the dash doesn't have a 4wd light i don't think. i figured it would be a 242 if it said so too but it's just screwed on the case. im wondering if some idiot thought that would be enough to change the case to a 242. after shifting through all the gears im pretty sure it's a 231. might need to buy a rebuilt case though

you have a np242... if your shifter says like 2wd 4hi N and 4lo you got a 242.

No, that is the 231 shift pattern, the 242 pattern is 2hi, 4 part time, 4 full time, N, 4lo

http://www.cartechbooks.com/cartech/...SA109_6_03.gif < 242 shift pattern.

The po might have swapped the box and shifter but not the cover, or just the box and not the shifter/cover. the only real way to know is to pop it open if you suspect the tag has been replaced.
