Please don't derail this thread with thermostat BS. There's a thread going about this already...look for it.

...and now I'm really concerned about the whole clutch fan thing.

Suddenly wish I knew who owned this before the roommate, so I could ask him what, exactly, he thought he was doing.

He likely did the 'mod' where people get rid of the viscous fan and replace it with another electrical fan. because they think that is actually better...Maybe at some point that fan failed and took it out and didnt botter to put it back...and sold it to your roommate...thats my thought. Could you maybe post a pic of your engine bay of that area? See what we're talking about and how to fix that...later...

I'll try to get a picture tomorrow.

I've got about three weeks to get everything figured out and get this thing good enough to tolerate whatever the emissions test will put it through.

( I just woke up here from nightshift sleep, so will have to read through half the posts again to catch up and see where we are atm...) You can get a lot done in three weeks, but will need to have an overview of what we're looking at atm thats needs to be done. It's a lot easier to plan how to fix what and when that way, and get you through the emissions tests..

Aside from the mysterious missing clutch fan....

I was planning on replacing the electric fan, the radiator, the water pump. The valve cover gasket is leaking, so I'm replacing that. The heater control valve. Thermostat and radiator hoses.

There's also the transmission cooler line leak. I haven't been able to figure out if it's leaking from more than one place, or if it's just at the place I posted a picture of earlier.

I don't even know what the Colorado emissions test is like. I do know that it passed about a year ago, and it wasn't in much better condition then than it is now, but I really don't like taking major risks.

Id replace the o rings in the line connector seems leak originally starts there . Pretty sure you can get the local. Install factory fan set ups cant really go wrong with factory cooling set up. Many Install after market fans with mixed results. Getting the newer style aux cooling fan pulls much more air than older 5 blade design. As for heater control valve just eliminate it run new heater hose from pump/engine to heater core and plug the small vacuum line from valve you eliminate.

Agree, factory set-up should be enough if you're not going all nuts with trying to drive through extreme terrain etc. See it as a restoration project

The worst thing I plan on doing might be a trip up into the mountains. On the roads. Just to see what the world looks like from up there.

And my boots were dirty, but old habits. At least I don't really shine them now.

I guess I'll have to learn where junk yard parts might be around here.

If you're going bone yard picking, here's something to go by concerning compatible years for the mechanical fan, shroud, and electric fan.

Mechanical Fan: Looks like 94-01 XJ 4.0 fans are the same.

Electric Fan: Looks like 95-96 XJ 4.0 fans are the same. All other years have different part numbers.

Shroud: Looks like 91-96 XJ 4.0 shrouds are the same. 97 and up are different part numbers.

Get a new clutch.

EPIC!

As requested by Roler, I got a few pictures. The first is almost identical to yesterday's, of the area where the clutch fan should be. The second overlaps a little so you can see the rest of the belt routing, in case I have a bigger problem. The third is more...just in case I'm dead wrong about everything and someone snuck a completely different engine in there, or something.

First.
Second.
Third.

If you need any other pictures, let me know.

Thanks, CCKen. Sorry, I missed that entirely. I was kinda concerned, because there weren't a lot of 95's in the junkyard I found.

I'm hoping all I need is fan-shroud-clutch.

With regards to the clutch, I've seen that some of them are marked at 'reverse', and the FSM even mentions that. Why are some of them 'reverse', and which am I likely to need?

Stand next to the left fender and shoot a pic of the electric fan installation.

With those free standing wires by the electric fan I'd say Bubba hooked that fan up to a switch so he could turn on and off manually.

if you go back to an OEM fan configuration you'll have fun figuring out how to un-butcher the wiring.

BTW, on the pic from the other post, I see Bubba butchered the fan side on the radiator and buttered it up with something like JB Weld.
