that's where mine was leaking. those are prone to leaking, actually. so i just cut mine and removed that connector and tightened the hose on the the hard line using a hose clamp.
it made it a lot easier when i installed another trans cooler also.
but feel free to replace it...

There may be a better place to post this question but since 99ZombieHunter posted I will go ahead and ask.
There seems to be almost an obsession with having a drilled hole (or jiggle valve in this case) in the thermostat. I've had my '93 for nine years and never had a thermostat with a hole. Never a problem filling/burping/bleeding. Fill carefully, add a bit of coolant if necessary after a couple of heat/cool cycles and done.
Dumb luck? Need varies by year or use? What am I missing? Obviously, if a given XJ needs a hole in the stat, fine but to say that all need a hole is not correct.
If it would be better to start a new discussion on this point, let me know.

I was wondering about the hole thing myself, after reading through the thirteen page thermostat thread I was linked to.
I'm trying to track down an acceptable thermostat, but, yeah, I got a little confused. Hole, no hole, fail-open good/bad. Different temperatures. It gets a little overwhelming. Especially when 'properly identifying a transmission cooler line' is a big step.

Thanks for the reply.
I finally got around to installing a Stant Superstat last summer. Locks in at 210* after about 4-5 minutes in warm/hot weather and never moves regardless of what the Jeep is doing. In what we call cold weather, sometimes drops down a touch -- about the width of the gauge needle. I've read in the forums that Stant out of the box quality now varies. Dunno, but I love the Superstat for now.
