HP 30 axle question/identification
Found this ad on craigslist:
"I have a set of jeep rearends out of an early 90's jeep Cherokee. Not 100% sure of the gear ratio. $100 for both"
Can anybody tell from this photo if the Dana 30 is a CAD (vacuum disconnect) or a regular axle with a straight shaft? I've never seen a vacuum disco axle so I don't have faith in my own discretion. If I were to take a guess, I think it is the non-vacuum disco, but again, I'm not sure. The owner isn't much help.

Most all who need any parts for a D35 just junk them and upgrade to a better differential like a Chy 8.25 for what they would pay for parts.
That is what most of the posters are telling you, no one keeps the Dana Turdy Five for long.

I understand. All I want to know is if anyone can tell from that picture if that hp Dana 30 is one with a one piece axle shaft or a vacuum disconnect one.

You guys may want to take another look at that rear end. Those look like the finned 10" brake drums found on the D44!
Ask me how I know!
I threw one away looked just like that before I found out the difference between that one and the one I kept. Was just getting back into XJ's and didn't realize the 88 I had bought for parts was a Wagoneer and optioned out like that.

I did think the brakes looked a little different, but I was comparing them to the drums on my 8.25.. So they would look different to me if it was anything but an 8.25. Are you sure it could be a 44 though? To me it looks like the rubber plug is on the lower half of the diff cover, meaning it would be a 35. Aren't 44's more in the middle of the diff cover?
Like several of us have said, the D30 "appears" to be a non-disco, but it's hard to be sure from that photo. Even if it is, it's an easy fix if you want to swap in another axle. If you want it, go look at it. You will be able to quickly tell if it's a disco D30 when you check it out in person. These are probably going to be the best answers you'll get with the provided photo.
