Default HP 30 axle question/identification

Found this ad on craigslist:

HP 30 axle question/identification-image.jpg

"I have a set of jeep rearends out of an early 90's jeep Cherokee. Not 100% sure of the gear ratio. $100 for both"

Can anybody tell from this photo if the Dana 30 is a CAD (vacuum disconnect) or a regular axle with a straight shaft? I've never seen a vacuum disco axle so I don't have faith in my own discretion. If I were to take a guess, I think it is the non-vacuum disco, but again, I'm not sure. The owner isn't much help.

Looks like a non-disco 30. The rear looks like a D35. Tell him to keep it.

Thank you. I believe I would keep the 35 though because I have friends with 35's and it would be an advantage to them to have an extra axle laying around.

Anybody else have an thought? I'm looking for quick responses as it is a classified ad and I would like to act as soon as possible if it is somthing Im interested in.

I understand the 35's are junk, however like I said in my last post I have friends that use them, so I would get it anyway. It's always nice to have extra parts laying around.

Most all who need any parts for a D35 just junk them and upgrade to a better differential like a Chy 8.25 for what they would pay for parts.

That is what most of the posters are telling you, no one keeps the Dana Turdy Five for long.

I understand. All I want to know is if anyone can tell from that picture if that hp Dana 30 is one with a one piece axle shaft or a vacuum disconnect one.

The picture is a little fuzzy. Would you please roll the axle over and take another picture so I can get a better look.

From the pic it doesn't have the vacuum disconnect which is kind of a big box on the axle tube on the passenger side.

It is a craigslist ad and the owner is unable to take more pictures for whatever reason, that is why I'm asking for other opinions and thoughts.

You guys may want to take another look at that rear end. Those look like the finned 10" brake drums found on the D44!

Ask me how I know!
I threw one away looked just like that before I found out the difference between that one and the one I kept. Was just getting back into XJ's and didn't realize the 88 I had bought for parts was a Wagoneer and optioned out like that.

That's not a D44. The 30 looks to be a non-disco axle.

I did think the brakes looked a little different, but I was comparing them to the drums on my 8.25.. So they would look different to me if it was anything but an 8.25. Are you sure it could be a 44 though? To me it looks like the rubber plug is on the lower half of the diff cover, meaning it would be a 35. Aren't 44's more in the middle of the diff cover?

It's not a D44. D44 covers are not oval shaped (D35 are), and the cover in that photo appears to be an oval.

Like several of us have said, the D30 "appears" to be a non-disco, but it's hard to be sure from that photo. Even if it is, it's an easy fix if you want to swap in another axle. If you want it, go look at it. You will be able to quickly tell if it's a disco D30 when you check it out in person. These are probably going to be the best answers you'll get with the provided photo.

Thanks for the help everyone. I just wanted to hear from some other people that they think it is the regular axle and not the disco type. I didn't have confidence in my own decision!
