Some background. 1991 Cherokee, 4.0 with 5 speed manual transmission. 200k+ miles, rod knocks like a jehova's witness but he is still running strong.
Yesterday when I started the Jeep I could not get it in to gear. The clutch pedal felt soft, and could not be forced in to first. I managed to get it in reverse (albeit with a lot of grinding) then drove it to work. As the day progressed the problem got worse to the point where I got stuck at a stop sign for 10 minutes because I simply could not get the jeep in to gear. What could be causing this? The master cylinder has fluid and doesnt appear to be leaking. Changed transmission fluid 100 miles ago. Am a looking at a full clutch rebuild? if so where is the best place to source the parts. Thanks for any advice.

 

Could be the slave cylinder inside the bell housing.
Up to 93 the AX5, AX15 Jeeps used a slave cyl / throw out bearing. In 1994 MOPAR changed the design to an external slave for the clutch.

If your slave cyl. is bad it will be time for a new clutch.
So if that is the case look for a 1994 and up bell housing, it will make your life much better in the future.
Mine is an AX5, but the swap is the same. Look on my build thread for info on the swap.

 

The problem is your clutch is not disengaging 100%. Anytime the clutch is dragging you will have difficulty getting the transmission to go into any gear. Either your master cylinder or the slave cylinder or possibly both are leaking internally and the only real fix is repair or replace both. Don't attempt to drive it until you get the clutch repaired or you risk damaging the transmission.
