Heater core question
Hello folks I just joined in so I’ll be new to the Cherokee world. I entend to purchase a Cherokee or two and have been looking and studying. One thing that does Bring tiny beads of sweat to my head is the thought of heater core replacement. My question is this- are there any models of the Cherokee that are easier to do this job of heater core replacement than others? Thanks

Yes, there are. I have an 86, although not the desirable period, but it has a panel that comes out of the center that allows you to access the heater core. Not sure when they switched to the one piece unit, but I am thinking up to 92

It does look easy tho compared to the 97-01.

The 97+ has "more" stuff in the dash, but both aren't really that difficult to pull.
Just takes some time to break everything down and find all the bolts holding it in place. On my 98 XJ, I did not need to remove the steering column or seats. All I did was drop the steering column down as far as it would go and pivot the dash from the passenger side. Gave me more than enough room to get the HVAC box out of the Jeep.

I have a 95 and the heater core is original and works beautifully. I too dread the idea of pulling the dash apart to access it if ever I need to.
On a 96 and earlier model you'll want to eliminate the Heater control valve which will prolong the life of the heater core by pumping fresh coolant through the core even when the temp control is on cool. I did mine and it was super simple and inexpensive.

Illuminating the heater control valve , would that not make your interior hot ?

Nope. Will not. Says the guy from Arizona who has eliminated quite a few of them.

I really wish someone would post a picture of this heater core "access door". Not that it matters now but I'd love to see the easy way in case I live long enough to ever have to do this again.

There is really not much to see. It looks just like the others except you can see a half dozen small bolts with 8 mm heads
