Hey all, just got the new (to me) XJ, and it is getting noisy. Need to do tune-up and might tackle oil pump. But what has been your best resource, besides this forum, the Haynes or Chilton manuals? I used a Haynes for my Mazda B2200 yrs ago and found it short on pics and description, and have used Chilton for my toy and CJ. But I see a few Haynes references so i thought id throw it out there. Also, I have bad lifter noise. Marvel mystery oil made it worse so i'm changing oil pump. any other insight?

Factory Service Manual is by FAR the best. Most comprehensive and specific for your year. ebay sometimes has a good deal on them. Get the FSM if you can; you'll never be sorry.

Coming in second place is Chiltons. They are OK.

Bringing up the rear is Haynes. I have found more incorrect and generic info. in Haynes.

I had a haynes and a chilton for my 86 Olds and they were identical, word for word.

 

they chilton manual and the haynes manual are the exact samething because haynes bought chilton out years ago, so if you can get an older chilton that would be best

 

So far I have found that my haynes manual isnt worth the paper its printed on, TBH Im having alot of trouble finding relitive info about the electricals in my XJ.
