Default glasspack

Was thinking of replacing my old raggedy stock muffler with a glasspack from advance auto.. Need advice on install.. Will i have to weld it in place or is there some other way i can rig it up, like clamps or anything like that? Just wanted to ask

You can use clamps, but I'd weld it or get it welded so there are no holes.

My welding skills aren't as good as they could be (still learning) so I just clamped mine. It's also easier to take it back apart if something gets FUBAR'D while off-road.

Just to ask, did it just slide into place? And howd you cut the muffler off? I have access to a sawzall

Yup, I used a sawsall to take off the old muffler. The inlet and outlet on my new muffler was the same size as the exhaust pipe so I got a connector in the exhaust section at the parts store that was just a little bigger. Slid it all together and used exhaust clamps to clamp every thing tight. Make sure you replace the exhaust hanger. I used a short turndown pipe and dumped it at the end of the muffler right in front of the axle. Yes, it would be better welded, but mine has held up over the last year and I drive mine to work in the woods almost daily.

Some people say that a glasspack will drone, especially at highway speeds. Mine isn't that loud (to me). Mine has a decent rumble and doesn't sound ricer at all. But, you need to remember that EVERY XJ will be different. What works fine on one, MAY not work on another. I'd have loved to get a Flowmaster or other quality muffler but price was my main concern as I am poor. I got a Thrush glasspack at AZ for $19.99 + tax. I use their reward points, so my muffler cost me $0, all I had to pay for was the hardware. I actually thought that my glasspack was going to be louder as it is a 2.25 inch straight-through design. It was a pleasant surprise to not rattle the neighbors windows (unless I REALLY get on it).
