Default extra drivetrain play making loud clunk noise

When I go from reverse to drive a loud clunk is made . I checked all my u joints rhey seem fine but also when I decel without hitting the brakes it makes a loud clunk noise too . I don't know what this is . Could it be my rear end having excess backlash play in it or my transfer cace has extra play ? Also my drive shaft angle is kinda bad I have 3 and a half inch springs with 2 inch blocks no schims the only angle changing mod I have is a trancfer cace frop kit any ideas ??

If your u-joints are good, it sounds like slop in the differentials and/or transfer case is likely.

I think I know what you might be experiencing. It is a design issue with the slip yoke.

From 97 and on, they are not lubricated in a bath of ATF like prior years. Over time and miles, they dry out and need to be lubricated. I do it on my 99 about every 30-40k or so. Easy to do.

Consider this not an actual problem, but more of a characteristic that some choose to chase and others just live with.

Here is a link to this VERY common issue on 97-01 XJ's. Good luck!

Pull off your rear drive shaft and twist your diff yoke back and forth and measure the backlash. It won't be a perfect measurement but will be close. I am guessing U-Joint though. It might be binding up and thats why you can't feel it.

How did you check your u joints?

You said you have a bad drive line angle, that points to bad u joints

i have had my xj since 80k and am now at 120k and have had numerous mechanics try and figure out what this noise was and after 30 minutes of work this fixed my problem. THANK YOU!!! i replaced every ujoint on this thing trying to figure it out. Is there a way to put a grease zert on there at all?

Glad I could help. This is a very common problem. No, can't put a zerk on this. Just have to re-grease it when it becomes problematic. Even if it clunks a little, it doesn't seem to be much of a reliability issue, but it FEELS like there is something major going on! Earlier models had the slip yoke lubricated by a bath of ATF fluid, so they never experienced this.
