Default Engone gunk

My friend just bought a 99 Cherokee and replaced the valve cover gasket. When we took the cover off everything was covered on gunk. Other than taking a screw driver and scraping it all off, is there any other good way to get rid of this crap?

Drain the oil. Put in 5 quarts of Rotella 15-40 T3 diesel oil with a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil. Use a Napa Gold filter. Run it for 1000 miles and monitor the progress by shining a flashlight into the oil filler hole.

Have you done that before? I've heard putting diesel oil in will hurt a regular engine.

Haha that's true. I googled it and it sounds like it works well. Convincing my friend, who never works on vehicles, is gonna be tough.

Don't convince just go with him to walmart and buy it with a mopar or wix or napa gold filter. Problem solved lol. If he asks, say the 4.0 oroginally was intended for diesel tractors.

That's what I'm gonna have to do. The previous owner took it to Jiffy Lube for oil changes so I'm guessing they didn't do half of what they charged for

That's exactly what I was thinking. A friend of mine took her Jaguar to JL for years only to find out that they never actually changed the filter cuz they didn't wanna order one for her car.

Rotella T3 15/40 is also SM rated for gasoline engines.
