Default Engine Trouble

I'm new to the forum just looking for some advise. I have an 89 wagoneer limited with a inline 6 it has 170,000 miles on it. The motor has problems going up hill or under power. any sort of an uphill grade the jeep does not handle it well. On the last hill I put it in third gear and the RPM's didn't even change. Also if I'm trying to go over an obsticule and I can put my foot to the floor and the jeep willl just stay there, acting like it does not have the power to go up/over it?

Thanks for the help

As far as the lack of power, I'd be curious if the catalytic converter is clogged. An over abundance of back pressure will suffocate a motor. Is the Jeep registered in the State of California? And if so, when was the last time you had a smog test done?

It seems to be when I put it into third I felt the truck shift. However the rpms didn't change and it didn't improve its ability to go up hill.

Go get a vacuum gauge for a few bucks at a parts store, and we can check a few basic things

It is registered in California, and I just smoged it this Sept. If failed originally replaced the 02 censor in gas cap, and it passed with flying colors.

I have a vacuum gauge. When I bought the jeep there were a few vacuum leaks and the storage canister was borken. got a new canister from the junk yard, and fixed the leaks I could see. After this the air started to blow out of the vents. I can hook a gauge up to it though.

Have to ask. How's your basic tune-up hardware? Plugs, wires, cap and rotor are due every 30,000 miles.

I'm thinking it's probably a vacuum issue as well.

All were just done including, motor and trans oil. I will check the vacuum and see what happens.
