Default Driver's side axle question 1990 Cherokee

Okay, when I was making left hand turns I heard a clunking noise.

I bought a MasterPro CH 8220 axle shaft to solve this problem. I've tried to insert my new driver's side axle shaft multiple times; however, the axle shaft would lock up when tightening the 3 - 1/2 spline bolts to mount the hub back on.

I discovered the teeth for ABS sensing were about an inch thick and the original was about a 1/2 inch think so when I tightened the hub the ABS teeth were pressing on the hub bearings locking everything up when I tightened the final 1/4 inch.

I talked to a part guys and he told me the ABS teeth collar is pressed on and can be removed. I decided to try this and did remove the collar. I put it back in the differential and everything went in together without an issue.

During my test drive I have a message showing "Check Antilock" which makes sense since I removed the ABS collar with the teeth. I hate having error messages displayed and am not sure if this will affect operation so I'm looking for the correct axle shaft.

I've gone to O'Reily's, Autozone and Napa looking for the axle shaft with the thinner collar but the only axle showing has that 1 inch thick ABS collar.

Does anyone know where I can get that driver's side axle or do I need to purchase a new axle and a different hub? If I do replace both, will the ABS sensor work properly?

Please see the picture of Clunko (which I'm trying to replace) and the chunky collar I removed from the new axle shaft.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Why not just change the U-Joint on the original axle?

I was thinking about doing that but was worried the U-joints would be different the way this restoration project is going.

Well, it should, be pretty straight forward. It happens that mine were uber tight. Pressing back in I had to put pressure on it, than whack it a bit, repeat. (see post 20)> https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/fro...-disco-147978/ A guy just last week bent his ear because he just kept pressing.

Again it's just a normal U-joint. If it looks like more than you want to take on, a shop will press it in pretty cheap. Cost me a 12'r of Bud last time when I got caught on the road. (waz a Chevy drive-line in my Jag)

Well...you would think it's straight forward but it's not. I removed the u-joint and thought I had the correct part but it's too small of a diameter. I went to Autozone, O'Reily's which didn't have the correct size then finally went to Carpros (Jeep dealership).....guess what? I found out the axle shaft has been discontinued and the u joint would be special order and take a week to get in.... WTF?

What the hell do others do with this situation?

Forgot to mention...tried NAPA too. LOL

Thanks for the feedback....that ABS collar is driving me nuts.

I guess I'm going to a pick and pull.

If you were able to press the collar off the new one, could you remove it from the old one also? Then swap the collars?
