Default Dextron II

I was just reading another thread about transmission fluid, it brought up a question in my mind: I did not want to hijack the thread, so I started a new one.

I have about 8 unopened quart bottles of Dextron II transmission fluid sitting around (I used to have an old car that ran thru a quart every couple of days, this is what I had left when the car finally went to the great beyond).

I have not used this stuff not knowing if I should.

1) Can I use 10-15year old transmission fluid without damage to my cars?

2) If so would the Dextron II be appropriate for any of the following Jeeps 96XJ, 98XJ or 95YJ (All automatics XJ's are 4.0, YJ is a 4cyl).

idk for sure, but i think III is what you want, as for the age... the new stuff isnt that expensive, and the guy at the store should know which fluid it takes.

The aw4 was designed for dexron II.
As long as the bottles where sealed I think it would be OK. Pour one out in a clear container, see if anything has settled/etc.

It would work for all those jeeps, but Im not sure about the YJ. They used a GM trans, IIRC.

I agree, you can use Dex II or III or any other higher number Dexron when they introduce them

You can use it, but DEX III is better, so for the cost of 8 quarts of tranny fluid vs. the next design of fluid, I'd toss it and use DEX III.
