Default Dash wiring help

I need some help sorting out some wiring throughout the dash in my new to me 87 xj.

My gauge cluster fuse keeps blowing when I turn on the headlights. I want to make sure nothing is missing. PO cut up a lot of wires.

The wiring harness will have extra connectors for items you don't hae. For example, a couple of those connectors look like they were for the optional dash tweeter speakers. You really need to track down a copy of the service manual and go through the connector wire colors.

Reading electrical diagrams has never been my strong suit.

I pulled the radio, gauge cluster and all the switches. Still blowing the fuse as soon as I pull the headlight switch.

The passenger side front turn signal and headlamp were burned out when I bought it so I replaced the bulbs and now they work, but I'm wondering if it is a wiring issue up there.

I've been following all your renix tips and now that it's running it's on to interior and electrical issues.

Ok, so I pulled the front turn signal bulbs and headlights and now the fuse doesn't blow when I pull the switch.

But it still blows if I turn the headlight switch brightness all the way up as soon as I get the top range.

Any thoughts?

It sounds like the dash lighting circuit is feeding the side marker circuit. If you put a single side marker bulb back in that you've removed, starting from low, does its brightness change if you turn the switch to high?

I'll try that when I get home from work tonight. Only had a few minutes this morning to monkey with it, and I'm running out of fuses.

When I put the side market bulbs back in they don't change when adjusting the dimmer.

I put all the bulbs back in one at a time and tested the switch. None blew the fuse. It now only blows when I turn the dimmer all the up as soon as I reached the brightest setting.

I should also mention none of my dome lights work either.

I get you. When you say all the way the way up do you mean where it clicks and locks in to position or just prior to that? Someone correct me if the earlier XJ's do not have this feature.

If it's blowing when it clicks on, that is the setting to turn your interior lights on, which you say none of them work. I would start looking at all of the interior lights, for me there are 2 front/middle overhead, 2 front footwell and one rear cargo in my 95 all controlled by that click, you may have a different amount.

It blows just before the click point to turn in interior lights.

I'm going to pull the interior lights next. The footwell lights do not work either.

Do all of your instrument lights work, switch lights etc? Here's what I can gather should light up from the 88 FSM:
Gauge cluster
A/C panel
Heater panel
Rear wipe/wash switch
Fog light switch
Ashtray light
Cigar lighter light
Defogger switch
Digital clock (takes a signal to dim)
Power/comfort switch
Transfer case light
Drive selector light

A few idea to throw around:
Somewhere has an overrated bulb, the transfer case and drive selector being the easiest to access and get wrong.
If the fuse blowing is solely the instrument panel fuse then I wouldn't suspect the HL switch as the fuse is after the switch output. The wire colour shows to be ORG-T which is in your pictures.
Does it have an aftermarket radio and if so, have any of its wires been spliced into the ORG-T wire?
Try and follow this wire colour and look for anything that does not look stock.

None of those lights work. I pulled all those bulbs itand and switches and it still blows.

It has a stock radio in it. I pulled that out but someone had spliced in speaker wires to run to some crappy under seat speakers and chopped some other wires. This whole thing is a mess.

Pulled the dome light covers and there wasn't even bulbs in there.

Can you post a picture of the fuse board and which one is blowing?

The red arrow is the fuse that's blowing, but I was so focused on the dash lights I didn't realize until just now there is no fuse in the dome light spot. That's the blue arrow.

Also I just looked at my picture and seems to be an overrated fuse in the park lights spot. Damn PO.
