Cycle Rack Advice
I have a 2 year old Jeep Cherokee 2.8 CRD Limited.
I now want to be able to transport 2 to 4 mountain bikes and I'm struggling to find a suitable rack. There are some racks that will onto the spare wheel of most 4X4's, but I'm not sure they will fit on the Jeep spare wheel cos of the hinge - would appreciate any info/advice on this.
I have found a rear wheel mounted rack that claims to be able to carry 3 bikes and this would do, but again, not sure it would fit.
I also understand from talking with the Jeep guy when it was last serviced that Jeep don't sell anything like what I'm looking for.
Obviously, there's the option of roof bars, but I'm only 6 feet tall !
Many thanks in advance,
Andy (Skyfox1884)

Hitch mount is the way to go. You can get them to carry up to 4 bikes and they are sturdy. I have one that straps to the back of my tailgate and I will get a hitch mount as soon as I get my spare tire carrier.

Hitch mount!!! I dont know how much money you got into the bikes but mountain biking is my main hobby and theres no way id put my bike on something that straps onto the car! A freind of mine had a strap slip on the highway and lost his bike, car behind him ran it over and he got to pay for a new bike-and damage to the other vehicle......not a good day.
Hitch mount is much more secure.

Thanks for the replies guys - I assume for 'hitch mount' you mean 'tow bar' ?
Will the 'hitch mount' cycle rack take account of the spare wheel that is a feature of the Jeep Cherokee ??
Many thanks,

Not sure what terminology to use but the ones Im talking about slide into a reciever hitch (usually 2"). The better ones will fold down to allow you to access the rear hatch wihout removal of the rack.
www.mtbr.com is a good review site for anything mountain bike related. Here is a link to a Thule model that is pretty popular:

Are you saying you have a rear mounted spare and a CRD too? Where are you from, the UK???
Yes, UK based.
It's not just that the spare wheel is rear mounted, but that it has a hefty hinge to the passenger side that includes the number plate and it is the hinge that is causing me problems because many of the cycle racks that fit to the spare wheel need to fit flush to the wheel and can't accommodate an offset on one side. I can't believe I'm the only Jeep Cherokee driver in the UK that wants to carry mountain bikes on the back - someone must have encountered this issue and got a way around it.
Tks.

If you go with a reciever style rack you could get an extension that should give you the extra clearance needed for the rear mounted spare.
just a suggestion...
