I just completed this tip today, but I was wondering why to do it? Was the factory locator off?

I've seen the tip, and in DFlintstone's sig it says:
"The book's wrong! #1 is at 5:00, viewed from the side. 153624 clockwise"
So...I think that has something to do with it? The Haynes manual is for sure wrong, not sure about the factory indicator though.

Hmm well ok.. I though it was odd the factory had a tab on the distributor to bolt through AND a distributor hold down usually meant for the kind of adjustment that the tab was not allowing...

I was scratching my head over that one as well. I suppose it's Cruiser's experience that the pin is not always perfect for every Jeep. Just never came up as a priority for me to look at, seems there is always something else to do first.
Stabs, not so much firing order as much as fine tuning the relationship of the rotor to the electrode on/in the cap.

Mine was off, and had been off for 20+ years. Never gave it a second thought. It ran fine. BUT........when I did Cruiser's indexing, I found it to be off quite a ways, and the result of indexing it was very surprising to me. The engine suddenly sounded like it liked to run. Prior to the indexing it had been very "raucous" sounding (the best way I know to describe it....not mis-firing or anything, just working hard, like I feel now that I'm gettin' old). Like I said, it had been that way so long, I didn't notice until it was no longer making such a racket. Nothing else changed, no mileage improvement or anything else, just a much smoother, quieter engine at all speeds. Before, I could hear the engine at highway speeds, above the road noise and above the wind noise. Now I cannot hear the engine at all. All I hear now is road noise on a rough textured road, or wind noise on a smooth road.

It was off so far, that I really thought, "could I have been running one tooth off all these years?" So I actually pulled the dizzy to check for that first, before cutting of the locator tab. But it was not nearly that far off when I moved it one tooth. But I'd venture that it was well over 1/2 tooth off, retarded. Maybe it's why they make that blade so wide on the Renix rotor. The front (leading) edge of the rotor wasn't quite at the #1 post at TDC.

By the way, free....appreciate your helping to get that young lady through her dizzy probs. I just had to give it up. I think everyone was starting to confuse her for ahwile there. Not an easy job to teach a total novice on a forum venue.
