You have a renix system which used a closed pressurized bottle for the overflow so it could not be vented.

Like DESERTXJ206 said it does have to be pressurized. So if you make one make sure that it will hold the pressure and not leak or you will still have the same problem.
Let us know how it comes out if you make one.

I may have a pressurized bottle I could send you. I bout it for $35 brand new with cap, used it 2 weeks then switched my whole cooling system, to the newer open style system. You could have it for a few bucks if I can find it.

STOP! Get a MAC's surge tank and you will have to never worry about it again.

Where is it leaking? Around the threads of the cap by chance?

Might be the cap?
Pressure test the system and or cap, which ever is easiest for you.
System test OK, then it is the cap.
I say which ever is easiest, 'cause a system pressure tester is easier to find around here. Only dealers bother to test caps, to verify warranty charges to manufacturer.

You can switch over the cooling system for well under $80 if you want using a moroso in hose filler neck, 2 hose clamps, some 5/16 hose, a radiator cap, and a dorman 603-001 reservoir.
