Start W/ u-joints in front drive shaft. The click that you hear is most likely also present in 4 HI, but you tend to not hear it because you are moving faster ( road noise masking it) It could be axle joints but I would start W/ u-joints

Sounds like stretched t-case chain. More torque from gear reduction in 4-low causes the chain to slip on gears more than in 4-high. crack the case open and see if it is stretched or loose, it will be close to resting on the bottom of the housing if it is badly stretched. If it was U-joints it would be present all the time since the Cherokee does not have unlocking hubs, everything spins all the time. Check both.

my guess would be the chain. thats what mine was. it started as a clicking, then turned into a loud popping noise. seemed like sound was from front axle. this is a very easy fix
