I have a 99' 4runner and a 99' cherokee. The toyota has never had any problems - I wheel both of them regularly - jeep has had cracked engine block= new engine - nickle and dime's me to death - toyota has not - i think that for the quality of the parts and build quality the toyota gets the upper hand

is it that too much negative or positive castor will cause this, and you have to be just slightly off 0deg. either way and it will track straight?
Because he had too much caster and you didn't have enough. You want a bit more positive than 0 degrees. Meaning if you're looking at the driverside of the jeep the front SAI should look more like this / than like this |

what the heck did you do to crack a block?

the only time i have ever cracked a block is because i did something dumb, not because the vehicle was bad

Im rocking an 0331 and have never had any cracks, and if I do it hasnt been dratic enough to catch my attention. Every vehicle had its flaws in the long run, regardless of manufacturer. But, this is a cherokee forum, not a toy forum, and conversation regarding what type of 4x4 you drive is not helping anyone out. Your opinion is not wrong, its just your opinion. I just think dicussing which is better should be done in person over a round of drinks, not over the internet.

So, Has any of the suggestions helped anyone recover lost steering? Seems to me that I would ditch the alignment shop all together, dedicate the cherokee to trail rig status and get a daily driver for the weekdays, perhaps a toyota, since they are such better vehicles. I kind of like my dual duty wheeler to be at around a 33 for tire size to keep eveything somewhat manageable. I prolly didnt help you at all with your steering issue, huh?

If your used box was in rough shape, could be a fair amount of play there.

Ditch the Y steering, grab some grand cherokee knuckles and do an over the knuckle setup.

well now i didn't say that i don't spend money on the jeep, granted my jeep is a 99 and the yota is 2010 fj, i don't compare them on that level at all. but i can say in a trail test i did, i had my cherokee lifted 2" with stock rubber (which was smaller than the fj's tires), and an open rear (the fj's was locked), and the xj made it through this goey mud hole, while the fj just sank to the bottom.

tested them out on the dunes as well, xj floats like no other (i can run the dunes in 2wd) while the fj sunk again. since the xj has the unibody design, it keeps those frame rails from hittin bottom, and it makes it lighter.....more ground clearance and less weight = great trail machine it also has a better approach / departure angle .....

but like i said, the yota handles better on the hwy....
