Default Cheating Fog Lamp relay/switch

The OEM fog lamps on my 89 XJ limited only come on with the low beams - maybe I have that wrong - will they turn on when the headlights are off? In any case, high beam shuts the fog lamps off. Anyone know if there's simple way to cheat the relay or switch to have the fog lamps controlled solely by the fog lamp switch

In addition, does anyone know the maximum bulb wattage that can be used with the factory relay/wiring?

Thanks for any advice.

No idea on getting them to work any time.

On the bulb wattage its typically about 20% less than what came OEM because crappy wiring

You do not say what year. Put factory fogs in a '00 that did not come with them. They look stock from the front, look stock in the passenger compartment thanks to boneyard parts. Mine run independent of the headlights and without the key even on. Doubt you would want to go through all this trouble but I did do a write up.

While researching putting in the factory fogs I came across some postings about what you want to do. Took a second to find them. Here. One leads to another.

^^^. Need a year. I believe on 84-95 it's as simple as removing or bending a prong on the relay, however, I'm not sure which prong or if those are the correct years. I do know on my 90 the relay is on the driver side fender.

Hi Guys. Thanks for your notes. It's an 89 XJ limited, two door (I fixed the OP).

Hi Ralph. Thanks for posting those links. Unfortunately the wiring for my 89 is different (I think).

Looking at the wiring diagram for an 89 (I think I have the right one), the power to activate the relay comes from the Fog Lamp switch, but the input voltage to that switch come from 'beam select' switch. So it seems if I was to simply remove the 'beam select' wire and jumper from some other switched 12v source, that would do the trick.

Anyone know if there is an avaible 12v 'accessory' tang on the fuse block?

Be careful modifying your lights, in Ohio it is illegal (ticketable offense) to have your fog lights on at the same time as the high beams. Before my fogs rusted out and I installed the putco harness, my fog lights would work with low beams and parking lights only (2000). If the fuse block is the same on the '89 as my '00 you should have at least one open accessory spot.

From the factory anything with fog lights they only come on with the low beams and cut off when the high beams are on.Reason being in fog just like snow using your high beams will make it worse for you to see.

So are you saying that the low voltage run source for the switch comes off the beam select switch and you know what wire it is? If I am understanding you correctly maybe this will help:

So you can take that wire attach it to the fuse tap and put it in an open fuse in your box. In my '00 slot 13 was open and gets power even with the key out. Had to mount it upside down because of the relay in my fuse box. Used the supplied 10 amp fuse and you have to put it in the slot farther away from the fuse box to have power. Sorry if I am misunderstanding you and this is of no help.

Just occurred to me. That link, also seems they are not working, is for the mini fuse tap that I needed. Almost positive there is a full size fuse tap too. Thinking my '96 was full size fused and yours would be the same.

Ya, tried Google. The results are typically for later model jeeps and don't apply to mine.
