Yes, it can. Personally I just put it in the gas tank when it gets down to a 1/4. I pulled the heads after doing that and found the chambers to be clean. And that doesn't mess with your sensors

How are you using it?
Are you inducing it through a vacuum hose directly into the engine? Or are you using it as an "additive" in the gas tank?

Unless you were using higher concentrations than recommended on the can...... or using it with every fill up, that sort of thing, it usually doesn't cause any problems. Your symptoms are most likely coincidental.
If you want to describe your symptoms of "running bad", we'll try to give you some advice. Include plenty of details and any maintenance history that may apply.

I used that compressed gas can that has the tube that goes into the throttle body the way that was discribed on the can and it messed up my TPS! It got into it thru the shaft seal and caused it to run all funky and not idle at all unless you held the throttle down. The throttle body is designed to pass nothing but air, not solvents! It may be okay injected into the heater vacuum line, but NOT down the top of the throttle bore! It works very well in the fuel tank, but that doesn't clean the intake manifold, just around the injectors and chambers.

This worked for me.
Wanna clean carbon from inside your engine? Have doubts about it?

Good old water injection! My grandfather used to do that with his model T, for cripes sake! The whole point is the water gets absorbed by the carbon and boils off taking the carbon with it. This doesn't do anything for the crap that accumulates in the intake runners and intake valve heads though. This is caused by oil vapor from the CCV system catching dirt particles too small for the air filter to stop, then baking hard like on a cookie sheet. Seafoam in the fuel will help with the valves, but not before that.

Mr Gasket "Cataclean" works good for that. It cleans the cats as well as what Seafoam does. I was skeptical until I used it. Boy, what a difference it made!
