Just acquired another '99 Cherokee and the exterior plastic is pretty faded. What is the best coating for the exterior parts?
Well don't know about best but a lot of guys have used the Krylon Fusion.
I think they usually pick the satin black one.
Seem to be happy with it.
Been meaning to experiment with that and the SEM Trim Black.

I had amazing results years back with Rustoleums textured spray paint for out door stuff, like out door furniture. I cleaned the fenders flares really well and sprayed on about 4 good layers. It look excellent, smooth, even, and never chipped off or faded. I even ran it through the woods and scrapped it up again trees and whatnot and it held up. It looks like they have bumper and trim paint now also.
I used Duplicolors black trim and bumper paint on the front fender flares, bumper caps, grille and headlight bezels. It has sat in direct sun most days for atleast a year and still looks good. I cleaned everything using Dawn dish soap and warm water, let it dry, and then scuffed it up (forget which grit) a bit before painting. No primer, and no clear.
Clean and prep it well.

I will be pulling the trim parts for paint. Not my first XJ, I have pulled the trim pieces before and learned where they hid those pesky little Philips head screws. I installed a new front grille, hood and cowl to replace the custom white tail front end mod on my other xj.

I pulled my fender flares off to do it. This was on a Tacoma back about 18 years ago.... Unless you dont mind spending an hour taping and covering things you dont want to get hit with paint.....
Going to give him a hard time about that when I email him back. LOL.
Thinking he probably did a good job taping it off.
I wouldn't even try myself. I know how bad my skills are.
I want to say that some guy here bought a Jeep and decided he wanted to pull off the door molding.
When he did you could see the black on the doors from the PO's painting them and doing a lousy tape job. LOL.
