Default AX 15 rebuild...

I looked up the process on YouTube, and it looks pretty simple. My question is will I need anything special? Do I need to press the bearings? I don't have a press, and I'm hoping I can do the rebuild without.... Any other tips for me? It will be my first rebuild, and I'm quite excited.... Is that sad??

Jealous, wish I could give up my DD for the however long it would take to do that. Looks like fun lol.

If I remember the bit in my FSM about the AX-15 yes you need a press.

Under 'special tools' it mentions a bearing splitter, gear pullers, dial indicator set, and some assortment of seal installers/pullers that could probably be improvised. Also it appears that a micrometer, strong magnets, and snap ring pliers would come in handy.

Thanks for the info, I'm going to order the kit tomorrow, any place in particular I should shop? I don't want to have to do this more than once!

Ok, so it's done!! I bought the kit with synchros. I also replaced my clutch and flywheel. The rebuild was my first, and being 6.5 mo prego made it even more interesting! The advice I can give is make sure it's in neutral when you pull it, have a pipe you can put all the main shaft parts on in order as you remove them, and the D tents in the shifter shafts are a BASTARD! Take notes on what position the shafts are when you removed them because they have to go back in order or you will be fkng with it for hours. I also was swapping my T case, turns out my new one had a different spline count so I swapped planetary and input shaft with my old T case. The old one was a bit wore out but it will last for a bit. The chain was wasted though! The tranny gets set back in tomorrow Merry xmas to me!!!

Nice work! How much do you think the project ran you, and did you end up using the press much? Be interesting to see if the kid's gonna have a birth mark of gear oil! :P

Kit was $250, with synchros. I didn't need them but figured I'd just do it all. It could've been a 1 day job if I had more experience but it was my first time. Press came in very handy, as did a puller for 5th gear, get snap ring pliers!!! I didn't have any so each one was a 2 person job for me! I had full use of a shop, I swapped a water pump, radiator, thermostat and hoses on a 2.4 for a buddy with a shop (worst job eber) and got some $ and the shop

I had a 20ton press to use, but the actual force used barely registered on the gauge, a small press will work, get some pipe to use for pressing bearings and such back on. I wasn't impressed with the quality of the seals in the kit for the price, so a cheaper kit most likely would've worked.
