Popping from rear (?) of 2000 cherokee
Over the last couple of days, I've noticed, twice, that I've gotten a popping sound when shifting from park to drive or from reverse to drive.
First time, I heard a pop when I backed up out of a parking spot and put it in drive.
Second time, pulling away from a curb last night, shifted from park to drive and heard a pop.
It SEEMS to come from the rear driver side.
I haven't really noticed any other symptoms of anything, except that the vibe from my tires seems to have increased slightly lately. But, I'm also not sure if i might just be imagining that. My tires have always whirred while driving. I have duratracs, so they've never been quiet or a smooth ride. But, the vibe from them while driving, especially around 50-60 mph does seem increased lately. But, maybe that's due to the fact that the fronts wear faster than the backs, and they do need to be rotated currently.
Because of how loud the tires can be, I'm not sure that I'd hear any tell tale signs of a problem over the noise from them.
U joint maybe?
Am i just imagining things?

Visual inspection- you may see a fine, powdery rust around the caps.
Hands on inspection- if you try to turn the driveshaft there may be slop or play.
How many miles are on it? Have they ever been replaced?
