Default AC pulleys/belts vs. non-AC

I am deleting the AC on my 99. Don't try to talk me out of it, I have 4 or 5 reasons to do it. Main reason is it would cost me money I don't have to fix it. Anyway, looking at it I see that you can't just take the compressor off and run a different belt, there needs to be another idler or something for the belt to work. What do I need to accomplish this?

You have a few options. If the ac compressor still free spins, just leave it there and take off everything else behind it. If it doesn't free spin, you can find an alt off another vehicle with a similar bolt pattern and hook that up, doesn't have to be connected to anything if yo dont want.

They also sell a bypass pulley for around $30 that bolts right in, that is probably your best bet.

If you want to get real creative, you can turn an old ac compressor into on board air.

Ya, my thinking right now is just to unplug all the connections, chop out all the lines and canisters, remove the "radiator" in front of the radiator, and just leave it. With the harness unplugged it shouldn't try to come on.

No need to "chop out" anything......2 pull-apart quick connects at the fire wall, 2 quick connects beside the battery, 4 compressor bolts, 1 clamp bolt at the accumulator/dryer.....virtually gone at that point and could be re-installed later/nothing destroyed. Only thing left is the condenser in front of rad (that comes out easy) and the evaporator under the dash (that doesn't come out easy), just leave it. Probably 50-60 lbs. gone as well.

all you need is to (optional) remove the ac unit entirely, or (recommended) just leave it, unplug it and run a belt for a non ac jeep.

I believe non-a/c XJs have a pulley in place of the compressor.....the belt is the same for both.

id be willing to bet your correct! it wouldnt be an option to just get a belt that is shorter and bypass running over the ac pulley cause it physically wont work... so a bypass pulley then?

AC or not, that diagram doesn't match my setup. I have a tensioner idler pulley next to the power steering pump.

Went to the junkyard and found a bracket and pulley from a non-A.C. Cherokee and swapped everything out. So far so good. I absolultely love how much clutter I ditched from the car. I can see the alternator now!
