93 Cherokee 2wd to 4wd
What years can I get to convert my 1993 2 wheel drive to a 4 wheel drive Cherokee ? I am looking for a donor 4x4 and is it easyer to swap bodys or the drive train? Does it have to be a sport or can it be a grand?
I know its easyer to buy a 4x4 but it belonged to my stepson who we lost 5 years ago this friday(8/17/2007). I just want to make it into something he would have been proud to have owned.
Thank you guys and I hope I'm not taking up too much of your time.

Years shouldn't matter much. I would try to find a 91 - 95. You will need a front axle with the same gear ratio as your rear, a transmission from a 4x4, and a transfer case with shifter and linkage. It is possible to replace the output of the aw4 with one from a 4x4 to connect it to the tc also.
Sorry to hear about your stepson. I haven't done a 2x4 to 4x4 swap but I'm sure someone who has will chime in with any details I left out.

I didn't read all of these threads/builds but follow these links and I'm pretty sure it'll get you headed in the right direction...

Can you give some more details? Do you have a manual or auto? Does the 89 have a manual or auto? What transfer case does the 89 have? What rear axle do the 89 and 93 have? Give as many details as you can and you will get more responses. Best of luck.

Mine is auto and the 89 is also. I'm willing the change out all parts.Engine, trans, transfer, and rear end. Will they fit or does the 89 to 93 take welding and such. I just want to get a year that will change over easy. Some one once said 91-95 is that so or will the 89 work? Thats all. Thanks for the help and this is my work computor so it take a little time before i'm back on again. Sorry for the delay.

The 89 should work fine. One thing to keep in min is the dana 30 on that 89 is likely a vacuum disconnect. You shouldn't have to swap the rear axle, just use the drive shafts from the 89.
You're going to want to make sure your gearing is the same as the donor unless you do plan to swap the rear axle. Most 4.0 auto's came with 3.55 gears, some with tow package came with 3.73. You can request the build sheet from Jeep here http://www.jeep.com/wccsapp/universa...ull&category=U

Use google and search as it will yield better info... type"site: cheorkeeforum.com 4wd swap"
Dont get a front axle with vacuum disco... It'll be a PITA for ya... so anything after 91...
Look for a 91-98 tranny IIRC... Not many differences other than wiring things you have to change but thats easy... like the 98 i think you have to make a plug longer...
For a T case... either will be fine depending on what terrain you want to drive on...
Make sure you get the right length drive shafts also... (you'll need to match it like if you have a 231 t case and a 8.25 axle etc...)

I can't thank you enough for all the help. As far as terrain I will be on will be mostly just road with . I do hunt but no intention of ever taking it mudding. A litle mud after a rain kinda thing. Thanks again
