Thanks....no need to get testy. I have a '96 front end, Dana 30, and the tranny is out of a '91 4.0L 5-speed 4x4. I understand now that it's easier to just change the tranny.....My only concern now is making sure that the gear ratio is going to be the same.....

good luck. i know there is some trick to turning the tire with one tire per axle off the ground and counting driveshaft revolutions. I think you turn it twice and count how many revolutions the driveshaft takes. trans needs to be in neutral to do this.
if you have limited slip rear you'll need both tires off the ground.
I always just pull the diff covers. you need to anyways on the front axle since you're throwing it in....never put one in with old fluid.
the gear ratio is more or less stamped on the ring gear....it will have one larger number and a smaller number next to a bunch of serial numbers. divide larger by smaller to get gear ratio

So, I finally found a donor jeep. I'm getting a '96 xj, that been garaged for th epast 4 years!!! (what a shame) The best part is only 75 bucks! A buddy and me are spliting the cost, he needs some parts also. I belive that it has the D30 HP front, and it's a 5-speed, not sure of the T-case, You guys know what came though for t-cases on a '96 5-speed? I'm picking it up this weekend, and stripping it, then next weekend, mine will grow up to be a 4wd. Another question, I heard that the mounts for the LCA's are higher on the D30 then it is on the straight axle that I have now (2wd). Is this true? I hope it is so the my LCA's will level out alittle. The XJ bug's getting worse.......
Thanks,
J

*sigh*
no.
you cannot directly bolt a t-case to a 2wd jeep transmission without completely gutting the transmission, installing a 4wd output shaft (which means needing a gear PRESS [NOT PULLER]), installing a 4wd output housing.
what is your donor jeep trans/engine?
if you don't know specifics of the trans designations, tell me the simple thing...4 cylinder, 5 speed, 4 cyl 4 speed, 4 cyl auto, 6 cylinder 5 speed, 6 cyl auto.
since you have a 4.0 5 speed, you need the transmission out of a 4.0 5 speed 4wd.
there is ZERO other way to convert to 4wd except to pull the trans and either swap it w/ a 4wd trans, or convert the trans from 2wd to 4wd using a junk donor 4x4 trans for parts. If you think otherwise....I hope you learn quick.

So after Memorial day weekend me and a couple of friends are going to make my '94 5-speed 2wd XJ, to a 4wd. I have a donor jeep that we are going to use, is there anything that I should know about before we start? Like the gearing (I'm has to be the same in front and rear diff?) what about the electronics? vacuum lines? all that good stuff? Any advise from you guys would be a great help.....
Thanks,
J

Hi All
I know this thread is old but here goes.
I have a 91 MJ Comanche standard shift that I am converting to 4wd. what is the best year Cherokee donor vehicle for this project, Would you go Automatic or stay go with a standard shift? I do realize that I will have to change the tranny.
Thanks
Bob
