Budget 4wd to 2wd conversion
I have a 1990 xj that i sourced a transfer case out of, but the motor and transmission are both good. I am trying to keep this jeep moving on a budget as a 2wd toy rig. I do still have most of the transfer case, just some of the gears and shifting fork have been sourced. Is there an extremely low cost 2wd conversion I can do? Or am i better off getting a used t-case and running that?

Well, that's a new one. I have no first hand experience with that. Ive done a limited amount of reading on this forum about going the other way. My understanding is going from the 2WD to 4WD setup involves changing out the transmission. So, I would assume you would have to do that with yours. I would suggest replace the transfer case, shouldn't cost much more than $100 for a decent one on CL or a junk yard.

There's nothing "budget" about this. I don't understand why you don't source a tcase. You'll probably have a much easier time finding that than a 2wd transmission. Not to mention the extra work required...

Do the XJs use a different transmission or just the tail shaft and housing?
Though I imagine finding just a tail shaft and housing would be pretty difficult too.

I took the t case off of this jeep, my parts jeep, to put on my daily. Instead of letting the parts jeep sit and rot, I wanted to see if there was another way other than getting a 2wd tranny. If you saw the jeep I'm working with, you'd get more than diabetes, dude... It has been rolled (previous owner) and is the mother of all backyard builds

I was thinking more like this but in a street version since it is currently missing the t case.

probably just going to keep it 4wd at this point. i was hoping somebody had a homebrew idea to make it work with spare parts. I've found several full t-cases for $75, so I was just checking to see what ideas there were for less to shave a few bucks off the project. I bought this thing as parts so there is no title, hence why every dollar invested is basically lost on this thing. Just a wild idea i'm keeping on the backburner
