Default 1999 xj 2wd 5speed conversion to 4wd

Hey guys,
I'm new to the forum, besides reading a ton on here for help before haha. So I've only had my xj for about 3 months now, and it's my first manual car and I love it, but it's only a 2wd. I've seen all of the 'sell it and buy a 4wd' but I live in Southern California and it's not as cheap to do that out here as in other parts of the country. I got a really good deal on mine and it's pretty clean, so I guess I was just wondering if it's at all possible to retain the 5speed while gaining 4wd. Any assistance would be great. Thanks everybody

You will need to get another ax-15 transmission (if it's a 4.0) that is 4wd type along with front axle, transfer case, etc

Yes it would. the only thing is that you would have to replace the transmission. Your best bet is to find a junker 4x4 5 speed and pull the trans the transfer case front and rear drive shafts and axle assembly out and anything else that looks good and try to recoup some of your money by selling the 2wd components and the left overs from the junker. Look for a jeep that is the same year as yours. Or you can tear the trans down and remove the rear housing and output shaft and swap in the 4x4 version. But that still leaves you having to find a case, drive shafts and front axle assembly.
