8.25 Gearing
I've got a 96 sport I'm using for parts with an 8.25 rear. I was thinking about swaping it into my 89 that I'm currently driving, but i dont know what kind of gear ratio the 8.25 has, all of the information on it, even the part number, are gone, I only know it's an 8.25 because of the size of the axle tubes and the shape of the dif cover. My 89 is running on 30"s and It's throwin off my shifting and power, but the 96 could spin it's all over the place. If the 8.25 has a Higher gear ratio, willl it be bad? I always see people saying to get the same gearing as your stock, but I dont understand why.

well since it is a 96 it has a 27 spline instead of a 29 spline and chances are it has 3.55 gearing...as for the other stuff, no idea...

if you cant find or read the tag an easy way to find out is to jack the rear end up and block the front tires so it doesnt roll away. rotate your tire one full rotation while counting how many times the driveshaft rotates. its easier with a buddy or make some marks on the tire and driveshaft to see it easier. if it rotates around 3 times you have 3.07, 3 and a half you have 3.55 or a little more then 4 is 4.10 and so on. this will tell you what gears you have in your jeep now and you can use it on the axle before you throw it in also. 96 was the change over year so some may be 27 spline and others are 29. only way to know for sure is pull a shaft and count the splines. most people would say the 27 spline isnt much of an upgrade and if youre staying with anything under 31s i wouldnt waste the time swapping unless you break the stock rear.

the other way is you can pull the diff cover on the C8.25 and count the teeth on the pinion and the ring gear, divide the big number by the small number and there is your ratio

Thanks for the info, and i'll prolly be running 32"s eventually. as it is I'm just mot getting the power, and when i stomp on the gas from a dead stop it makes a grinding noise in the rear. I just wanna know, will I be takin a hit if it's higher gearing? i'm pretty sure the stock on my 89 is 3.07 cause the torque sucks. I can barely spin my tires in the rain lol.

Curios about what is the highest avialable rear end gears that will bolt into my 99 cherokee. Here in Florida it is all flatlands everywhere and I do alot of highway driving. There is more low end power than I will ever need.

if you have stock tires and gearing just leave it. if you change the gearing any higher you will have to be holding the gas down more to keep moving the same speed so youre really not saving any fuel just by having it rev lower.
