Default 2001 jeep transmission problem

hi everyone i just bought a 2001 jeep Cherokee 4x4, my first jeep newer then 1997 well when i test drove it, it didn't do this but when i was on my way home with it. was at a stop light and it seemed like it was in neutral pushed the gas and it kinda slammed into gear and then went, i was like wtf????? i called the guy i bought it from and asked whats with that, he said he forgot to tell me that it does that every once in a while. i was like really!!!! you forgot, i had a lot of cherokee's and that transmission has always been really good to me this is the first one that has ever acted up it doesn't slip at all when driving it. only once in a while at a stop anyone know what it could be i don't think the trannys going it shifts to good when driving. thanks

Guessing there is no CEL. Do this and see what happens.

Simple stuff first.

1. Check level of transmission fluid when hot. Is it the correct level on the dipstick?

2. What is the COLOR of the fluid? Healthy fluid is red in color. Dark/black fluid indicates that the fluid is no longer doing its job and needs to be serviced.

3. Smell the fluid. Does it smell burned? That is a worst case scenario for fluid which requires immediate replacement.

Dont you just love it when theres an issue, and the seller forgets to tell you? I dont.

What Ralph and tj posted is where id start as well. Whenever the AW4 starts acting up, those are at the top of the list.
