Default 2001 Cherokee intermittent overheating

2001 Cherokee, 50,000 miles. Has overheated 4 times now. The first two times I thought it was an issue of the coolant leaking. After the third time I replaced the thermostat. Now after the fourth time I'm thinking it probably has something to do with one of the fans.

It has also been having an issue with the A/C intermittently blowing warm air. This is leading me towards the fans as well.

Looks like it has 2 engine cooling fans, one electrical and one mechanical.

This is my wife's car. I'm planning on driving it to work next Monday and seeing if I can duplicate the problem. What should I check when the overheating condition occurs to narrow it down to a problem with one of the fans?

not to be a b**** or ruin your friday night but...... hows the coolant look or the oil? Just saw the 2001 and the first thing I was thinking was head cracking. I just did one on my friend 2000 with 103k on it. We put a 1999 head on it.

check the drag on the mechanical fan, and check to see if the electric fan comes on with the A/C on

For the electric fan, should it come on with the air conditioner regardless of what the engine temperature is? When the motor is completely cooled down should it still kick in with the A/C?
