Mine will run if I manually pour gas down the throttle body so I have spark and must be getting a signal from the camshaft position sensor, also no CEL, so we don't have quite the same circumstances I think. Did yours run if you manually poured gas down the throttle body?Originally Posted by JamDeeper
Camshaft position sensor. that was me to a T 2 months ago. with a CEL and a random kill at a stop light. 7 dollar diamond. i had actually done the fuel pump before the sensor because i had the same problems as you. i have 149000k on my 2000 and when i took the sensor out, i found the magnet to be broken. sounds about the same to me. I'm still thinking it's the fuel pump...........I should know this weekend. I'm not looking forward to dropping the tank.
Update: Replaced the fuel in about three hours today with a new Carter assembly and she fired right up despite the light rain that started when I was about about done.
Here's the problem. I'm not sure how long this had been in my Jeep but it's only got 154,000 miles on it now.
Here's how to get 20 gallons of gas out of the fuel tank and also back in later, well worth the $8:

Thanks for the advice guys. It's great to have the XJ back.

Thanks for the update. Not a shock that the Airtex pump bit it prematurely. Carter makes good products; you should be set for a long while now.
