How my day started:

I've been searching for awhile now and wanted some insight from you guys on my no start situation.
On the way to work today my 2000 XJ sport (154,000 miles) died at a stop light and would not restart.....just crank over.
I get it towed home and proceed to do some research online to figure it out and start some investigating.
1. Fuel pump will run for a few seconds when the key is turned on.
2. Swapped fuel pump and ASD relays with other relays from the box. Cranks but no start.
3. Took the schrader valve cap off the fuel line and checked for pressure best I could without a gauge......fuel dribbled out even after a few on/offs of the key.
4. No trouble codes, checked with a scanner.
5. Poured gas down the throttle body........IT RUNS
6. While performing number 5 above I tried the schrader valve again. Gas trickled out a little more than when it was just cranking over. It should spray out while idling correct? Around 49 psi?
I'm assuming that the CPS is ok since I have spark? (runs when gas is poured down the throttle body)
Does this sound like a weak fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator or a plugged fuel filter? or something else? I know the filter is located in the gas tank so it isn't an easy thing to replace.
It has ran great for the year I've owned it, up until today.
Thoughts?

nope. Change out your Crank shaft position sensor. It is bad. Some quick fixes. Just unplug it blow it out and plug it back in. May start right up.
Your fuel pump always sounds off for about 3 seconds and then cuts off.

Would I be able to pour gas in the throttle body and get it to run if the CPS were bad? I thought I would have no spark or fuel if it went out.
Just checked fuel pressure with a gauge......none cranking or when running with me pouring gas in the throttle body. Zero pressure.

If it starts when fuel is introduced, I don't think the problem is the crank sensor. The fact that it fires and runs means that the crank sensor signal is there.
I'd concentrate on a fuel delivery problem; fuel pump assembly is suspect.
Even if the fuel pump comes on and runs for 3 seconds, that is no guarantee that the fuel pump is working.

Ok I would start with the Fuel filter and work back since dropping the tank to do a pump sucks.
But I am thinking your pump is gone or it is clogged up.

I did just fill up Sunday and then drove 2 blocks home. I made it about a half mile to work this morning and it killed. Bad gas or just coincidence I guess.

With the fuel pump energizing, but no pressure at the rail......something with the fuel pump assembly is really about the only thing that can be root cause. All electrical controls are working properly as the fuel pump does come on with the key in the ON position.
When you replace it, look for a high quality assembly and replace the entire assembly, don't piece meal it unless you like doing things twice.
My favorite fuel pump mfg. is Bosch. Carter come in second place. I won't install or recommend Airtex.

I've got a new Carter fuel pump complete assembly on the way. It should be here by the weekend. My cost for the Carter complete assembly in town was $269. I found it online delivered to my door for $150.....hmmmmm, I can wait a few days.
I guess I'll go back to driving the CJ7 for awhile.

Will do. I'm sure hoping it does the trick.
The cheapy Airtex fuel pump assembly was $200 in town....or $150 after I could have used a coupon code from Advanced Auto. I figured why not get the better one and wait a few days for it for the same price.
Thanks for the input gentlemen.

Since you are planning to replace the fuel pump. Check out our write-ups section I don't recall seeing a good write up on replace the fuel pump on a newer XJ.
You could take some pictures and jot some notes to create your own write-up for the site...

Camshaft position sensor. that was me to a T 2 months ago. with a CEL and a random kill at a stop light. 7 dollar diamond. i had actually done the fuel pump before the sensor because i had the same problems as you. i have 149000k on my 2000 and when i took the sensor out, i found the magnet to be broken. sounds about the same to me.
