Due to lost purse, we seem to have lost both the keys we had for our 2000 XJ sport. Looking around on web, it seems this was around the year the chips showed up in the keys, but not sure. The lost keys both had a grey grip, but no buttons or anything. Would this be a programed key or normal? Can dealer supply keys via mail, with faxed title, or does jeep have to be present? Nearest dealer far away.

The Jeep would probably have to be present, however the best thing would be to call the nearest dealer. Even though they may be far away, they could at least tell you what you need. Also, do not discount a good locksmith, they could probably cut a key for you, call and ask. Either way, it may be a little expensive. Get an extra (3rd) key and tuck it in a safe place so you always have one.

Definitely call the dealer and see if the Jeep had the immobilizer (chip key). My 2000 TJ did NOT have one, but the original key was black. I believe the grey key was the chip, but the dealer will be able to tell you for sure.
If it's not a chip key, the locksmith should be able to help. The dealer should be able to provide a new key either way, but it may be a lot of work and waiting to get a new key.

The dealer can tell you over the phone if you have immobilizer or not using your vin. My dealer wanted $12 to look up the key code, and would cut as many keys as I wanted. The downside is my dealer wanted $25 a key. I bought two non-immobilizer keys with Jeep logo online for $8, total $20. Shop around, you can probably do it for less.
You have two options to recover your lost keys. The local dealer should supply your VIN number and proof of ownership. You may be able to get a new key made to match your car if you have never had the ignition key cylinder replaced. Or go here locksmith in e6 and see what options they have. Usually, locksmith specialists are designing new keys much faster and cheaper than the dealer.
