Key Problems
Ok,
I had some steel keys cut of WJ (01) as I dont have a spare. Are these keys chipped? It will start, and run for about 5 seconds then die and has a flashing circle over a key symbol flashing. I can use my original and its fine, but I was told by a dealership that it shouldnt have chipped keys. Is there something that I am missing? Id like to have a working spare that is good for more than opening doors. Thanks

If you have that key warning symbol on the cluster, you have the Security Key Identification Module (SKIM) that requires chipped keys. If you have the 2 originals, you can program more yourself, BUT since you only have 1, the dealer has to program a second one for you. The 2 originals are molded in grey. Aftermarket ones are black.
Programming the keys is a misnomer. The SKIM has to be programmed to recognize the transponder code built into the key. The dealer does that with his DRB III scan tool.

Once you have 2 keys that work, you can program additional keys yourself. To do that, you put the first good key in the turn on the ignition until the key symbol lights up, then off. Put the second good key in and repeat. THEN put a new key in and turn it on and wait. After a few seconds, it will beep and you're done. I THINK it will accept up to 6 keys, but IDK for sure.
