Default 2000 xj long crank on startup

My 2000 xj cranks for a while before it starts unless I prime it a few times, if I prime it then it starts up fine, could this possibly be a bad non-return valve on the pump or could it be something else?

Sounds like a bad check valve to me.

Ditto. My '00 does the same thing. I turn the key on, then off, then on again. Wait for most of the lights to go out and it starts right up. This is when sitting for a real long time or over night. In and out of it running errands starts right up. I am 99% sure mine is the check valve. I get 49 lbs of pressure when running which is right on spec. It did that before I upgraded to 4 hole injectors with a new fuel rail so I am pretty sure that is OK. Thing is that the check valve is on top of the fuel pump, you can buy one separate, and as OCD as I am (I want things to work like they are supposed to) even I can not justify dropping the tank to do just that. Figure I will just deal with it till the pump starts acting up or my OCD gets the better of me.

I went ahead and ordered a new pump assembly since I'd have to drop the tank just to change the check valve, figured id go ahead and just put a fresh pump in also and after some research I ordered some 4 hole injectors as well so hopefully my fuel system will be like new when I get done with it

What did you buy for a pump? From what I have read Bosch is the way to go. Despite the fact that it is the more expensive choice it is probably what I will go with if and when.

Why not just buy an aftermarket valve and splice it into a fuel line somewhere?

What was the part#? I work in an auto parts store and I thought with my discount it would be about $225. I am envious. LOL

Just looked at my online banking, it was $162 after tax, still a good bit cheaper than I had found other places

Ok update, I replaced the pump assembly (pump, filter, check valves etc.) and upgraded to 4 hole injectors, it holds pressure good when checked with a gauge at the pressure relief valve on the fuel rail but it still cranks longer than it should before it starts when it's been sitting unless I prime it twice, what else would be causing this?
