Default 1000 dollars for brakes?

Mechanic said my brakes were shot. He said that i needed to replace my steering knuckles because they were part of the problem with the brake calipers. Can anyone offer any advice? Thanks

I'd say ask a few other mechanics before you shell out $1000.

Ditto on getting a second opinion. Sounds like this guy is out to screw you on some serious labor charge for no reason. Steering knuckles have NOTHING to do with brake calipers.

Sure they do. The caliper bolts to it and the brake pads sit on a slide on the knuckles.

reagan.. have a camera? Roll up the sleeves and get the tires off. Post some pics. This is an easy job that people could walk you through, even if you do need knuckles.

Could be stripped out caliper bolts keeping the calipers loose. Which is why he needs new spindles, I think they make a oversized caliper stud though.

I still think the mechanic is out to make a buck. I know steering knuckles go bad but, I've never heard of a steering knuckle going bad for the brake caliper mount. That is a new one on me.

i'm willing to bet the knuckles where the pads slide are notched., in that case someone can fill the notches with weld and grind it flat and they would be good to go.

if you can't weld, knuckle replacement isn't all that bad you could get a whole spare front axle for under a hundred bucks.

I just ran into the stripped calpier bolt thing when I was doing my fronts for that write-up.
For $1000? No way, that's not a mechanic, he's a replace-not-repair guy, and for that price he's damn near a thief too. You want to get it done for decently cheap (I'm talking like $100 or so if you don't need calipers) hit me up.
Here's my price list from when I did mine (with a bad caliper bolt too)
Rotors, drilled: $74 shipped on eBay
Caliper bolts, new: 5.99 (x2) Advance Auto Parts
Pads, Wagner: $35 Advance Auto parts
Grand Total: $120

Beats the hell out of $1000
