is 1/2 quart oil to much?
i have a 97 cherokee with a 2.5. just changed my oil, 4 quarter, anyhow i put in about a 1/2 or bit less from one of those 5 quart jugs. after running it and letting it set for about 20 minutes. its about the same distance over the full mark on the stick as it would be at a half quart low. it does not leak any. is that a big deal? thanks...

That is technically right where your oil level should be. Any above the "full" mark is over full, so right in the middle between "add" and "full" is the correct level.

When it gets down to the add mark, one quart will bring it to the full mark. Anywhere in there is fine. Of course you can fo further if you start out at full!

Too funny how the most simple can get tricky. On a 4.0, no doubt 1/2 quart over, (IE, plus 1/2 the distance between full and add), is fine. Likely the same is true for a 2.5, but I myself just don't want to come out and say that.
I love your term "windage", Steely. I suppose the crank would not actually need to hit the oil to froth it up. Some close distance might do it!
