Verify oil pressure, but it is likely that considerable damage to the bearings has been done. Coolant reduces the lubricity of oil considerably and it doesn't take long......
I agree with fully investigating a salvage yard engine. I have installed MANY in 38 years of wrenching and have only had one that I had to exchange.
Sure you can get a rebuilt or a reman, and they are great options, but considering what your vehicle is worth, it will get you upside down in what your XJ is actually worth. A salvage yard engine is plug and play and a lot easier on the pocketbook.
Whatever you decide, the engine you put in there should NOT have an 0331 head!
Good luck!

Good advice here ^ Test first then decide.

Hi All,
If I bought an Alabama cylinder head, would I need to have a ring job?
Replaced my 0331 cylinder head with an 0630 cylinder head in 2009.
Had the engine rebuilt, everything except the push rods replaced.
I always heard if you have a valve job you should have a ring job at the same time, to keep from pulling oil past the rings due to the difference in the amount of pressure seal at each location. Or some such.

honestly if you have a bit of mechanical know-how, this wouldn't be that hard to fix. The crank bearings and head can both be replaced without even removing the engine from the vehicle. I doubt the cam bearings are gone, but then again I don't know how long the P.O. ran the engine like that...

Because you have a different problem than what this thread is about it would of been better to start your own thread. If you search renix cooling you'll find lots of threads about your issue, like these:
