skip the magnafluxing and head to your local jy and scoop yourself up a NON 0331 head and go from there. at least thats the route i would take

I'm dropping my head off today at DTS to have them magna-flux it and if it's good 200$ to put in new valves and springs, if it's cracked I need to know the best head other than the 0331 to buy

from what ive researched (since i may be in the same boat) these are your options:

new head from alabama or clearwater cylinder heads.
pricey, but strong

JY 0331 head
get one from a 03 or newer jeep running the 242ci I6
direct bolt on

JY 0630 head
from an older jeep (not sure of the years, but easy to google)
you will need mounts for the coil pack, which is not native to this head
as i understand it, not too arduous of a fab job

all 00 and 01 0331 heads have the weak casting..... it has a thin spot in the oil galley... all of them do unless its 02 or newer with TUPY cast into the head. The TUPY shows its the new updated casting.

In no way would i put $200 into a head that has a known casting flaw in it just waiting to open up on day down the road.

You can find a 02 or newer 0331 head with TUPY cast into it at a JY for about $75-100 and have it reworked for about $125

Thanks for the replies, i dropped off my head today to have it magnafluxed and came to find out it is just warped and an intake valve wasnt seating properly, i thought for sure it was cracked since it is a 0331, but for just about 200$ i had new seats and springs put in. I want a different head but dont have the time or extra cash so i figure when this one cracks ill buy a new one from the machine shop thats doing mine.

Hi All,

Replaced my 0331 cylinder head with an 0630 cylinder head in 2009.

Had the engine rebuilt, everything except the push rods replaced.

I always heard if you have a valve job you should have a ring job at the same time, to keep from pulling oil past the rings due to the difference in the amount of pressure seal at each location. Or some such.

If I bought an Alabama head, would I need to have a ring job?
