Serious Noob in Wyoming
Hello All,
Well I’m about as new as they come to the Jeep world. I know that Jeep owners are a good bunch but just never found myself among them till now. Just recently moved to NE Wyoming and being a native Texan I wasn’t entirely ready for the winter.
That being said my truck did/does just fine, but I realized I wanted something I could drive around in when things got slushy and not get too worried about beating up. At the same time my fiancé and I are really looking forward to this summer and doing a lot of camping/sightseeing around the Yellowstone/Teton area.
With that in mind I recently picked up a 1988 Cherokee Laredo on a business trip to Kansas City. It made the 13 hour drive back to Wyoming ok, but now that I’m here I’ve got some work to do.
I’ll say right off the bat that I’m going to try to keep my dumb questions to a minimum, and utilize the Search function before I start a new thread, however I’ll go ahead and apologize for my ignorance as I know there are many wiser individuals on here than I.
So how about my first question? Now that I’ve got the Jeep back at home, what do I need to look at on a vehicle of this age? It runs a little rough so I know a tune up is in order, but beyond that what else? I’m a fairly mechanical guy with a stocked tool chest, but don’t have any torch or welding experience, what can I do myself and what needs the professional touch?
Thanks for the help and I look forward to getting my hands dirty with this one!

Just go over it really well and make a list of what you need to fix. You are right to start of with a tune up, change all the fluids, check the suspension, ect. If it made that trip with no issues, I'd say you are in pretty good shape. Once you get the simple things done, you're all set to become a REAL jeep maniac. (And we're glad to help)
