Hello , been lurking around for a while reading and learning about XJ'S trying to see which one will work for me . This is a great site with some very smart people , I learned a lot thanks !! Just bought a 1999 4.0 sport 5 speed it has a few dents and dings , but no real rust, has 167 thousand miles on it ,and no oil leaks bone stock . Let the work begin !!

Nice find and smart move. I found this site 3 years after I bought my XJ, and would likely saved some cash if I did it your way.

I am a Mechanic by trade Nev DOT , retiring in a few years so I have some time to make this XJ right , Moving to Elko Nev it gets snow , and want to do some hunting fishing , not wanting a rock crawler but I want it to handle some off road trips tow a small trailer dirt bikes small boat most of all it must be reliable .

The short list would be
1 get the rear hatch to open
2 it is missing the muffler and tailpipe
3 the RPM's seem to hang IE slow to return to Idle may have to do with the missing mufffler / o2 censer getting to much air I will look at the TB clean it up and look for air leaked dont know yet , no check engine light
4 bushwhacker wheel flares
5 change all fluid's
6 rear springs seem to sage a bit
7 tires

the long list

1 rebuild motor stroker crank mild cam high flow valves port work 9.5 or 10:1
2 small lift 3" or less 30" tires maybe if I can calibrate the spedo its a can of worms LOL . then I would have to change the gearing I think it has 3:08 more home work LOL
4 front and rear bumpers winch
5 lockers of some sort true track maybe snow and mud
6 Roof rack
7 larger fuel tank you never have enough
8 paint and body work I have painted a few cars myself maybe a two tone something classy
9 the best radiator that money can buy
10 all new suspension weather it needs it or not
11 duel batters
12 spot lights
13 do away with the air bags if I can
14 do away with the ABS if I can
15 do away with electric window if I can
16 keep my son from driving it if I can
