Hey guys this is my post first on here and im trying to figure out what everyone paid for their 2 door xj. I found a pretty mint 2001 xj 2door, its red, all stock 4x4 auto with 93k miles. I can get it for $5400, whats everyone think. should i go for it? im from east tennessee if that matters. Thanks for any advice.
If all is solid then it mainly will come down to what you are willing to pay for it if is mainly rust free sounds like a good deal .That would be low miles for sure!
$5400 sounds within reason or even a good deal if there is no significant rust and the engine and other mechanicals are sound. Fading/flaking paint on the plastic flares is not uncommon and easier to correct than other body issues. These have the 0331 head that is prone to cracking if overheated, or sometimes "just because". In your area you should not have much rust concern but you will want to get under the Jeep with a good light and spend some time looking it over. Common locations for rust are inboard side of the rear quarter panels (look for the body plugs in this area), floor inboard of the rocker crimp seam, cargo area floor inboard of the rear wheelhouse, floor where it raises up behind front wheelhouse at the front driver and passenger area. While there look for any collision damage or odd paint/overspray. If you see fresh paint or undercoating be cautious.
Regarding the head if it was me I would perform a combustion gas test of the cooling system. You can "borrow" the tester from most major auto parts places and buy the test fluid for about $13. It is a relatively easy test to do but it takes some preparation. If you have questions on what/ how to do this respond back.
XJ's are increasing in price with the highest values in those with less than 100,000 miles, significantly damage free body/paint, stock condition and rust free. They are beginning to gain interest in the collectors market. If it really is in good condition it will sell quickly. Even if you find issues use that to negotiate a lower price. It still sounds like a good find.

I just paid $2800 for my 2000 about a month ago, 170k miles, some rust on the body and a patch of rust on the frame that I need to repair. I bought it knowing the suspension was worn out but was already planning to lift it so that didn’t bother me. Mine has a manual transmission. Some pics so you can see the condition
.
An 01 has the 331 head that's prone to cracking, a weaker low pinion Dana 30, and extra cats and 02 sensors that cause issues. I wouldn't pay more than 3K for it.

You might not be willing to pay more than $3k but a growing number of people are paying much more for excellent condition stock examples. At a December 2018 on-line auction a very nice 2001 2 door with 45k miles sold for $14k. In May 2019 a 2001 4 door located in Ohio with less than 80k miles was bid to $9k but did not make the reserve price. Another 2001 Classic version sold for $10k in January. In February a 2001 with over 100k miles sold for $9k. These are all very clean, unmodified, mostly rust free XJ's. Just saying it is not likely you will get a nice lower mileage one for $3k or even $4k.
Something is only worth what someone will pay. My daughter just paid 3500 for a 2001 4 dr, I6. Frame is great. New power steering and ac pumps. I guided her and told her of issues. She bought it. They wanted 4500. So that being said. Buy knowing you may have your hands full for a bit. But like with mine as i do work to it it gets better. Good luck. Get the one you want.
